Project contact: Dr Ron Hacker, phone (02) 6880 8002, email ron.hacker@dpi.nsw.gov.au

This sub-project seeks to provide insight into successful innovative and conventional mixed farming systems and provide information for use with other projects and within the communication, education and extension program for the region.

Case studies of six properties have already been completed and published:

 Low risk farming in a variable climate - Condobolin;
 Intensification and diversification in a mixed faming system - Young;
 Conventional farming with an eye to effective succession - Parkes;
 Pasture cropping as a whole farm system - Wellington;
 Intensive conservation farming - Greenethorpe; and
 Mixed farming with old man saltbush - Trangie.

Of the six properties documented for the regional project, five also contributed to a national sample of 40 case studies.

Insights gained from both the regional and national studies have contributed to defining provisional principles for profitable and sustainable mixed farming system in the central west of New South Wales.
