Region Snapshot

The Mallee region spreads across three million hectares straddling the New South Wales, Victorial and South Australian borders. It has a population of 278,000. Mildura is the major centre and a number of large towns along the River Murray support domestic, commercial and industrial activities.

The River Murray supplies the majority of reticulated water systems in the region. Groundwater reserves are significant and are used for all purposes outside the major towns. The soils are inherently infertile and range from shallow sands overlaying limestone in the west through a gradual increase in depth and quality towards the east. There has been significant clearing of remnant native vegetation throughout the region.

Wheat and barley cropping consume the majority of the land area, with wool and livestock enterprises throughout the region also.
